Jack the Ripper Suspect – William Henry Bury
William Henry Bury was hanged in April 1889, in Dundee, for the murder of his wife, Ellen.
Bury strangled his wife to death, then stabbed her with a penknife. He hid the corpse in a box in their room.
A few days later he went to the Police and confessed to being Jack the Ripper. He told the police about the corpse in his room and he was arrested for her murder.
Bury had previously lived in London, near Whitechapel. This and the similarity between the Jack the Ripper’s murders, and that of Ellen Bury led to him being suspected of being Jack the Ripper.
The police at the time must have considered Bury to be a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders, as Inspector Abberline was sent to Dundee to investigate. Ellen Bury was also thought to be a former prostitute.
It was also known that Bury was in the habit of sleeping with a penknife under his pillow, and chalk messages were found at the residence in Princes Street where his room was located. One said ‘Jack Ripper Is At The Back Of The Door’, and the other, ‘Jack Ripper Is In This Seller.
The Police investigation at the time must have come to nothing as he was not considered as a major suspect.
Conclusion: William Henry Bury was not Jack the Ripper.
